What is a Veterinary Internist?

A board certified veterinary internist has completed advanced training to have an extensive and up-to-date knowledge base in treating complicated medical cases and critically ill patients. An internist specializes in diagnosing and treating cases involving respiratory disease, endocrinology, infectious diseases, oncology, cardiology, and kidney disease. By combining radiology, endoscopy, ultrasound, and expert interpretation of blood tests, a veterinary internist can help you and your pet receive the most appropriate care possible. Dr. Carrie Miller of Virginia Veterinary Specialists has a strong interest and specialized skills in respiratory medicine. During her residency Dr. Miller trained with world-renowned respiratory specialist Dr. Brendan McKiernan. Dr. Shannon Ryan has a particular interest in gastrointestinal disorders, immune-mediated disease and endocrine diseases.  Their experience includes, but is not limited to, the following procedures and treatments:
